Linearisable third order ordinary differential equations and generalised Sundman transformations
We calculate in detail the conditions which allow the most general third
order ordinary differential equation to be linearised in X'''(T)=0 under the
transformation X(T)=F(x,t), dT=G(x,t)dt. Further generalisations are

Thermal conductance of thin film YIG determined using Bayesian statistics
Thin film YIG (YFeO) is a prototypical material for
experiments on thermally generated pure spin currents and the spin Seebeck
effect. The 3-omega method is an established technique to measure the
cross-plane thermal conductance of thin films, but can not be used in YIG/GGG
(GaGdO) systems in its standard form. We use two-dimensional
modeling of heat transport and introduce a technique based on Bayesian
statistics to evaluate measurement data taken from the 3-omega method. Our
analysis method allows us to study materials systems that have not been
accessible with the conventionally used 3-omega analysis. Temperature dependent
thermal conductance data of thin film YIG are of major importance for
experiments in the field of spin-caloritronics. Here we show data between room
temperature and 10 K for films covering a wide thickness range as well as the
magnetic field effect on the thermal conductance between 10 K and 50 K
The Puzzle of the Flyby Anomaly
Close planetary flybys are frequently employed as a technique to place
spacecraft on extreme solar system trajectories that would otherwise require
much larger booster vehicles or may not even be feasible when relying solely on
chemical propulsion. The theoretical description of the flybys, referred to as
gravity assists, is well established. However, there seems to be a lack of
understanding of the physical processes occurring during these dynamical
events. Radio-metric tracking data received from a number of spacecraft that
experienced an Earth gravity assist indicate the presence of an unexpected
energy change that happened during the flyby and cannot be explained by the
standard methods of modern astrodynamics. This puzzling behavior of several
spacecraft has become known as the flyby anomaly. We present the summary of the

Symmetry as a sufficient condition for a finite flex
We show that if the joints of a bar and joint framework are
positioned as `generically' as possible subject to given symmetry constraints
and possesses a `fully-symmetric' infinitesimal flex (i.e., the
velocity vectors of the infinitesimal flex remain unaltered under all symmetry
operations of ), then also possesses a finite flex which
preserves the symmetry of throughout the path. This and other related
results are obtained by symmetrizing techniques described by L. Asimov and B.
Roth in their paper `The Rigidity Of Graphs' from 1978 and by using the fact
that the rigidity matrix of a symmetric framework can be transformed into a
block-diagonalized form by means of group representation theory. The finite
flexes that can be detected with these symmetry-based methods can in general
not be found with the analogous non-symmetric methods.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure

Euler configurations and quasi-polynomial systems
In the Newtonian 3-body problem, for any choice of the three masses, there
are exactly three Euler configurations (also known as the three Euler points).
In Helmholtz' problem of 3 point vortices in the plane, there are at most three
collinear relative equilibria. The "at most three" part is common to both
statements, but the respective arguments for it are usually so different that
one could think of a casual coincidence. By proving a statement on a
quasi-polynomial system, we show that the "at most three" holds in a general
context which includes both cases. We indicate some hard conjectures about the
configurations of relative equilibrium and suggest they could be attacked

Discontinuous Euler instability in nanoelectromechanical systems
We investigate nanoelectromechanical systems near mechanical instabilities.
We show that quite generally, the interaction between the electronic and the
vibronic degrees of freedom can be accounted for essentially exactly when the
instability is continuous. We apply our general framework to the Euler buckling
instability and find that the interaction between electronic and vibronic
degrees of freedom qualitatively affects the mechanical instability, turning it
into a discontinuous one in close analogy with tricritical points in the Landau

The free rigid body dynamics: generalized versus classic
In this paper we analyze the normal forms of a general quadratic Hamiltonian
system defined on the dual of the Lie algebra of real -
skew - symmetric matrices, where is an arbitrary real symmetric
matrix. A consequence of the main results is that any first-order autonomous
three-dimensional differential equation possessing two independent quadratic
constants of motion which admits a positive/negative definite linear
combination, is affinely equivalent to the classical "relaxed" free rigid body

The flight path design, actual inflight control, and postflight reconstruction are discussed in detail.
